Automation of data management |
The key to commercial success is quick and secure access to business-critical data. As IT infrastructures become faster, there are also trends emerging that threaten the quick, secure and cost-effective use of data: The data explosion, rising storage costs and its ever-increasing complexity of management, the slow evolution of procedures and their lack of automation, the growing demands on data availability and security, and the proliferation of incompatible data islands. Clearly, therefore, reducing complexity is a primary objective. Trends in the storage sector show the direction in which we are heading: centralized data management, virtualization and a reduction in the number of variants as a way of simplifying storage configurations, information lifecycle management (ILM), i.e. automation of data management according to usage profiles and economic criteria, data encryption for greater security, and data mirroring for new levels of data availability.
HSMS (Hierarchical Storage Management System) is an efficient, centralized storage management system which reduces the complexity of data management on external peripherals, which automates data management and optimally integrates with the BS2000/OSD platform. Add-ons like automatic media management (MAREN), automatic robot control (ROBAR) and accelerated data encryption (cryptography) make HSMS into the scalable kernel for the information lifecycle management in BS2000-environments. HSMS supports the BS2000 administrator in the management of large amounts of data, as generated, for example, during data backups and long-term archiving to comply with statutory regulations (laws on retention of business records), as well as in usage optimization for external storage. The mission-critical qualities of BS2000/OSD and the storage hierarchy of the data center are utilized when BS2000/OSD systems are deployed as backup servers.
MAREN acts as the central point of administration for all data carriers, including those used by HSMS, ARCHIVE and ROBAR. The information held by MAREN about the data carriers used by HSMS and ARCHIVE always reflects the current status. The fact the procedures are automated ensures maximum operational reliability in the crucial handling of data carriers.
ROBAR enables the automation of mounting operations as well as cartridge retrieval and storage. The automated tape cartridge system works in combination with tape library systems like the L/LS series and CentricStor. By integrating servers and libraries into an enterprise SAN (storage area network), storage consolidation is made possible using the most advanced connection standards (Fibre Channel). Benefits include fast data transfer and extremely short response times.
