De-duplication backup offers extreme saving potentials for data protection tasks through eliminating duplicates on block level. The solution already reduces the size of backup data at the source, before transferring it over the network. This results in a great reduction of bandwidth needed and data to be backed up. Fujitsu offers Avamar – a complete solution for de-duplication data protection. Backup data is retrieved and de-duplicated by Avamar agents installed on client systems (Application servers and file servers), transferred over the network and stored on internal disks of the central Avamar solution. Avamar utilizes patented global data de-duplication technology to identify redundant data at the source, minimizing backup data before it is sent over the LAN/WAN. Since the data reduction is done at the client side, this solution fits very well for branch office backup and VMware environments, while reducing the amount of time required for backups, the growth of secondary storage, and network utilization.
