Increased data center efficiency with new PRIMERGY BX600 blade server

Fujitsu Siemens Computers introduces high performance system ideal for mid-tier applications

Munich,Germany, February 16, 2004 —With the new Intel-based PRIMERGY BX600, Fujitsu Siemens Computers has extended its blade server family with a new high performance system. The extensive connection options allow these blade servers to also be used as mid-tier application servers. The easy to administer PRIMERGY BX600 features high packing density, fail safety features and redundant components. Its latest-generation Intel® Xeon™ processor delivers improved output while ensuring future-proof operation. This modular blade server is highly flexible, dynamically scalable, service-friendly, reliable and economical.

Available at the end of March, the PRIMERGY BX600 will carry a list price of around €9,800 for a chassis configuration (including power supply units, switch blade and management blade). Each PRIMERGY BX600 chassis can handle up to 10 server blades, each priced (without operating system) in the region of €3,900 (including Intel Xeon 2.8GHz processor, 512 MB RAM and two 36GB SCSI hard disks). Prices include VAT.

Application areas and customer benefits
The new PRIMERGY BX600 blade servers are designed primarily for mid-tier application areas, and are thus suitable as a platform for virtually all data center applications. They are ideal both as high-performance application servers or as small to mid-sized database servers due to their large RAM configuration, many and varied communication options with Gigabit Ethernet for LAN connections, 2-Gigabit Fibre Channel for connecting storage systems, and SCSI interfaces for backup devices.

In addition to classic mid-tier applications like Microsoft Exchange or Lotus Notes, target scenarios focus on corporate applications including FlexFrameTM for mySAPTM Business Suite, traditional SAP scenarios, Siebel, Baan, I2, or similar. Because the required databases, such as Oracle 9iRAC or (especially) the new Oracle 10g version, increasingly support the scale-out approach, the PRIMERGY BX600 now offers the appropriate and highly scalable platform. All other components of the PRIMERGY BX600, such as its integrated Ethernet switches, are designed for high performance and throughput.

For effective computing in the scientific and financial service sectors, the necessary resources are simply switched together from computing nodes to form high-powered clusters. Due to its scalability, the PRIMERGY BX600 blade server is particularly suited to support this procedure.

The PRIMERGY BX300, the smaller and more compact sibling in the Fujitsu Siemens Computers blade server family, is used primarily in front-end operations as a highly scalable web or terminal server or as an infrastructure component.

Server management
PRIMERGY server management guarantees easy blade server installation and configuration. It also ensures reliable monitoring and efficient administration of all components, as well as simple analysis and version maintenance of system-related software or drivers. Remote management functions allow user-friendly and efficient central administration of the PRIMERGY BX600. Simple, automated multi-server installation is possible when it is used in conjunction with suitable deployment software, such as Fujitsu Siemens Computers’ RemoteDeploy or the Altiris Deployment Solution™.

Pilot customers
Fujitsu Siemens Computers has already made the new servers available for a number of pilot projects. One of these customers is Wincor Nixdorf International, which will use PRIMERGY BX600 servers to set up application services with Oracle RAC under SuSE LINUX SLES 8. PRIMERGY BX300 servers will also be used for Intranet, front-end and terminal services. Wincor Nixdorf was especially impressed by the quick and easy installation of the PRIMERGY BX600, as well as its flexibility and outstanding network performance.

Outlook
The PRIMERGY BX600 blade server chassis is a highly scalable system for rack use with seven HU (height units) and accommodates up to 10 compact server blades with two processors each. One chassis has room for four hot-pluggable redundant power supply units and two hot-pluggable fan units, extremely reliable with two redundant fans each.

At a later stage, 4-processor blades (quad blades), based on Intel Xeon MP processors, will also be available for the PRIMERGY BX600. The blade server chassis can manage up to five of these quad blades. Mixed operation of dual and quad blades is also possible, further extending the number of possible uses for the system.

Market figures
In the 2003 calendar year, Fujitsu Siemens Computers recorded a major increase in Intel-based server sales. According to provisional figures from IDC market researchers, the company achieved 28 percent year-on-year growth in the EMEA region, outperforming a market which expanded by only 20 percent (IDC, 01/2004).

Technical highlights of the PRIMERGY BX600 blade server
- Up to 10 server blades with two Intel Xeon processors each and 12 GB ECC DDR SDRAM (PC2100).
- Allows side-by-side operation of dual and, in the future, quad blades. This also applies to future server blade developments.
- Two hot-plug Ultra320 SCSI hard disks per server blade with up to 146 GB each can be operated as a RAID network (HostRAID functionality, level 0, 1, 10). No separate blade slot is needed to accommodate the SCSI disks.
- Two onboard Gigabit Ethernet LAN channels.
- Two 2-Gigabit Fibre Channel interfaces per server blade (optional).
- Optional PCI-slot module for adding, e.g. another LAN controller.
- PRIMERGY Diagnostics for displaying faulty server blade components, e.g. memory modules, CPU, Fibre Channel I/O module and PCI-slot module, and on the fan modules.
