Environmentally sustainable technology drives
innovation
Fujitsu Siemens Computers presents its environmental approach
in recognition of Earth Day 2004
Munich, April 22, 2004 —To coincide with the Earth Day celebrations across Europe,
Middle East and Africa and in 150 countries around the world,
Fujitsu Siemens Computers, the leading European IT provider,
announced plans to extend its existing product line of
environmentally sustainable PCs and workstations. These new
products, consisting of new environmentally sustainable models, or
so called “Green PCs” from the company’s SCENIC
Professional PC as well as the CELSIUS workstations, will be
available in the summer time frame.
Electronic waste is a top environmental concern. In Germany,
some 38 million households generate around 1.1 million tons of
electronic waste every year*. If a country like China had a
proportionate amount of electrical and electronic equipment, the
annual result would be around 17.6 million tons**. Therefore
governing organizations like the European Union have established
guidelines governing the obligation to take back legacy systems
(WEEE, waste electrical and electronic equipment) and the avoidance
of hazardous substances in the production of electronic equipment
(RoHS, restriction of use of hazardous substances).
Fujitsu Siemens Computers has carved out a leading position
in meeting these regulations. Eco-conscious technology has led to a
surge in innovations in not only in products, but also in
reductions in production costs including:
• Environmentally sustainable products already account
for 15 percent of annual sales
• As far back as 1988, Fujitsu Siemens Computers has
been recycling legacy systems at its own plant in Paderborn,
Germany
• To date, the company has invested between 500 and 600
thousand euros in each of its modern, environmentally sustainable
production lines in Augsburg
• First manufacturer to market a PC awarded with the
German Blue Angel, November 1994
• Fujitsu Siemens Computers is the first company to
offer state-of-the-art, environmentally sustainable PCs at prices
relatively the same level as traditional systems
Peter Esser, Executive Vice President Volume Products and
Supply Operations at Fujitsu Siemens Computers, comments: "For
us, environmentally sustainable products are not an end in
themselves. Our strategic orientation must place the emphasis on
overall environmental protection, from the supply chain, to
production methods through to the products we sell into the
marketplace."
The company plans to boost its overall annual sales figure of
environmentally sustainable PCs by a further 15 percent in the
course of the current fiscal year.
