Fujitsu Siemens Computers helps customers reduce TCO and unveils optimized IT approach

TRIOLE strategy broadens Business Critical Computing focus with evolving IT infrastructure technologies

Munich/Germany, May 25, 2004 —The Fujitsu group of companies, including Fujitsu (Japan/Asia Pacific), Fujitsu Computer Systems (North America), Fujitsu Services (EMEA) and Fujitsu Siemens Computers (EMEA), has outlined its global strategy for development and deployment of products, solutions and services to help users optimize their IT infrastructure. The TRIOLE™ strategy is designed to help customers reduce their Total cost of ownership (TCO) and will strengthen the group’s abilities to generate innovative offerings, allowing customers to enhance business efficiency, business agility and business continuity. TRIOLE™ is also part of Fujitsu Siemens Computers’ long-term Business Critical Computing focus and will embrace the leading European IT vendor’s wide range of server, mainframe, storage and middleware product lines.

“With more than 25 years of IT experience, from the mainframe business through to industry standard infrastructures, Fujitsu Siemens Computers has amassed a wealth of knowledge in the implementation and management of comprehensive IT infrastructures and solutions,” said Dr. Joseph Reger, Chief Technology Officer at Fujitsu Siemens Computers. “Now we are able to combine this real world experience with the latest, best-in-class technology to deliver highly adaptive IT solutions that help customers reduce total cost of ownership, improve service and increase profitability.”

TRIOLE™ strategy – an answer to today’s IT challenges
Customers face the following challenges: How to increase the efficiency of IT as they need to do more with less; how to adapt their existing IT to changing business needs; and how to best ensure business continuity. The TRIOLE strategy is based on three core technologies that address these issues: virtualization, automation and integration. In this sense, virtualization means the separation of applications and data from dedicated systems. Automation stands for the automatic adaptation to changes in the IT environment. Integration, meanwhile, signifies the rapid, cost-effective and low risk implementation of these technologies. This means much more flexibility for the users.

TRIOLE™ – a strategy with solutions available today
The integration of the Fujitsu Siemens Computers’ own offerings with premium products from software, hardware and service & integration partners is an essential element of this strategy to ensure maximum quality. Already today, TRIOLE delivers a comprehensive portfolio of products and solutions and thus provides immediate IT benefits.

One example of the TRIOLE™ strategy in action for virtualization is the FlexFrameTM for mySAPTM Business Suite solution. A joint development by Fujitsu Siemens Computers, Network Appliance and SAP, FlexFrame is the first realization of the SAP Adaptive Computing concept based on SAP’s NetWeaverTM initiative. This solution replaces yesterday’s environment of numerous dedicated, complex servers with a modular concept incorporating the latest Business Critical Computing technology, such as Fujitsu Siemens Computers’ Intel-based PRIMERGY servers (including blade servers) and Network Appliance storage devices. The FlexFrame solution simplifies IT infrastructure while offering on-demand provisioning and other autonomic features, reducing TCO by more than 30 percent.

Another virtualization case is the company’s CentricStor virtual tape appliance for nearline storage, which allows a large variety of server platforms to be connected to back-up systems in a straightforward and uniform manner. By reducing server downtime through a much faster back-up procedure, CentricStor improves end-user Productivity. By caching the back-up data, ewer tape systems are needed, meaning lower infrastructure costs.Higher automation of back-up processes decreases administration efforts.

In terms of automation, large self-installing PRIMERGY blade server farms (“IT manages IT”) allow several hundred servers to be deployed in the space of an hour.

TRIOLE™ has a key offering for the speedy integration of IT infrastructure components. An industry leading example is the comprehensive openSEAS middleware suite. It enables the integration of legacy systems and applications with new solutions as well as web and mobile environments. This enhances ones ability to change IT very quickly while at the same time protecting past investments. Oracle for example decided to take over some functions of today’s openSEAS Software Suite in its Oracle Application Server 10g.

TRIOLE™: Enabling tomorrow’s IT infrastructures
A key element of the TRIOLE™ strategy is a clear roadmap of future solutions / products that will provide further gains of efficiency, agility and reliability in all parts of an IT infrastructure.

In the plans for the Windows and Linux PRIMERGY servers will be an AS (Adaptive Service) control center, that automatically loads application software on additional servers when the workload is increasing. - The future AS control center for Solaris/SPARC-based PRIMEPOWER will also re-allocate system resources on demand, adapting the system to workload changes of the applications without any manual intervention.

To easily enable customers to achieve further agility gains, the Fujitsu group of companies also plans to introduce a structured process for pre-testing typical IT infrastructure building blocks in laboratories and recording them in reusable templates. This will enable customers and partners to accelerate the implementation of IT innovations.

All these developments come with clear objectives: a reduction in operating costs and workload while providing customers with the ability to quickly react to changing business demands.
