Investment security and dual processor power with PRIMERGY RXI300 from Fujitsu Siemens Computers

Intel 64-bit Itanium2 processor offers data center performance at a tremendous value

Munich/Germany, July 01, 2004 —With its new Intel®-based PRIMERGY RXI300, Fujitsu Siemens Computers has introduced a 64-bit dual-processor Itanium™ 2 rack server. The leading European IT manufacturer has thereby enhanced its Itanium-based product portfolio, which includes the renowned PRIMERGY RXI600 4-way rack server. The 2-way PRIMERGY RXI300 comes with two new Itanium 2 processors (1.4 GHz and 1.6 GHz) with 3 MB 3rd level cache, as well as the existing 1.5 GHz version with 6 MB 3rd level cache – the most powerful Itanium 2 currently offered. The new rack server is now available throughout Europe. Prices in Germany start at around €8,700 (excl. VAT).

Areas of application
The PRIMERGY RXI300 was developed mainly for extraordinary performance, which are specially required from scientific and technical applications. It allows users to simultaneously process huge quantities of transactions, while producing better analyses and higher quality image processing. The server’s outstanding performance also means commercial applications run faster and more efficiently. Integrated RAID-1 functionality allows the mirroring of important data for improved security and availability, while the three PCI-X slots and 2 GB ethernet ports add to the machine’s first-class capabilities. Its compactness makes the server ideal for data center environments: at only 2 height units (HU), as many as 23 systems can be integrated into a 46 HU large rack.

A large proportion of Itanium 2 users also profit from Fujitsu Siemens Computers’ Intel-based hpcLine (high performance computing) for complex technical applications. This group will benefit above all from the Itanium 2 processor’s improved performance and better suitability for large CAE (computer aided engineering) designs.

Binary compatible and suitable for many operating systems
The introduction of the Microsoft Windows Server 2003 64-bit edition and the availability of 64-bit versions from SUSE and RedHat Linux provide a good basis to increase the high-end server market penetration of value optimized Itanium 2 processor architecture. Even major software providers support this architecture with ever increasing enthusiasm. These vendors can now offer complete 64-bit solution stacks for business critical computing scenarios in combination with software for large ERP (enterprise resource planning) solutions requiring processors with such capabilities. In this respect, the PRIMERGY RXI300 rack server is now officially certified for SAP R/3 under Windows and Linux.*

The full binary compatibility of the Itanium 2 processor family with 32-bit hardware means that existing 32-bit software can run problem-free on Itanium 2-based PRIMERGY servers, offering additional investment protection. Optimizing the execution speed of 32-bit applications is taken care of by Microsoft’s IA32 execution layer.
