Fujitsu Siemens Computers takes responsibility for the environment

Electronics Goes Green congress showcases the company’s Green PC

Munich/Berlin, Germany, September 06, 2004 —Fujitsu Siemens Computers is taking part at the international Electronics Goes Green (EGG) 2004 congress, which starts today in Berlin and runs until 8 Sept. The leading European IT company is displaying its integrated environmental protection concept and Green PC product line at the congress, which draws together some 500 research and industry experts to discuss sustainable IT development.

With its professional PCs SCENIC E Green PC, SCENIC W Green PC and CELSIUS M430 Green workstation, Fujitsu Siemens Computers is the first manufacturer to offer PCs that are environmentally compatible at the price of a conventional PC. The amount of lead in the mainboards has been reduced from 12 g to 3 g, thanks to an advanced lead-free soldering technique. To achieve this, Fujitsu Siemens Computers is investing up to €600,000 in each mainboard production line, making it the forerunner in the industry for general PCs. Currently, green mainboards make up one-quarter of the company’s total mainboard production.

The consistent use of environmental technology has not only stimulated innovation at Fujitsu Siemens Computers, but also helped lower production costs. On its own, optimizing the supply chain in regards to environmental considerations brought annual savings of over €2 million.

“We are continuously working to make our entire supply chain more environmentally sustainable,” commented Peter Esser, Executive Vice President Volume Products and Supply Operations at Fujitsu Siemens Computers. “But environmental sustainability is not an end in itself. Our strategic orientation has to place great emphasis on environmental protection, from the supply chain and production methods to the products we sell, in order to ensure that we remain sustainably competitive.”

The EGG congress is organized by the Fraunhofer Institute for Reliability and Microintegration IZM in Berlin and the Research Center Microperipherics at the Technical University of Berlin. It was first held in 2000.
