CentricStor Continues to Lead the Industry in Supporting the Broadest Array of Platforms

CentricStor Virtual Tape Appliance now adds VM and VSE Operating Systems Support

Munich/Germany, September 14, 2004 —Fujitsu Siemens Computers announces that CentricStor, the most powerful Virtual Tape Appliance available, continues to add functionality critical to customer needs by adding support for IBM’s VM (Virtual Machine) and VSE (Virtual Storage Extended) operating systems and backup applications. The benefits of an automated tape consolidation solution with CentricStor in terms of flexibility and scalability are now available for VM and VSE sites. Target audience for this new support are IBM VM/VSE customers who want reliable tape backup with the newest technology for tape automation.

CentricStor, developed by Fujitsu Siemens Computers, is deployed as a self-contained disk-to-disk-to-tape (D2D2T) solution with virtual tape interface that supports predominant heterogeneous operating system environments and backup applications. CentricStor enables today’s complex data centers to consolidate their tape environments onto fewer real tape devices and tape libraries while shrinking backup windows and dramatically reducing data recovery times. The net result is a less capital and resource intensive environment that saves money and time and reduces business risk.

The additional support for VM and VSE environments includes the backup applications Dynam-T, VM-Backup and EPIC. CentricStor continues to support the MVS, OS/400, BS2000 operating environments as well as a broad range of Open Systems (UNIX, Linux, Windows) with backup applications like Legato NetWorker, Tivoli Storage Manager, Veritas NetBackup, HP Data Protector and CA BrightStor ARCserve. Major tape automation platforms and tape devices from such prominent companies as StorageTek, ADIC and IBM can be attached at the back end.

“Our industry-leading development efforts enable us to continue to quickly add necessary functionality to the CentricStor solution. The next consequent step after the recently announced support of OS/400 was to add the VM and VSE extension,” said Dr. Helmut Beck, Vice President Storage, Fujitsu Siemens Computers. “VM/VSE customers are now able to include these systems in their tape consolidation.”

”Our competencies are focused on customers with IBM environments”, said Claus Trockels, International Director Service and Consulting of becom Group Holding B.V. “A lot of our customers were waiting for such a virtualization solution to keep their backup and recovery processes up and running with the newest technology for tape automation.” The becom group, an IT infrastructure specialist offering IT Consulting & Services, is certified as a Fujitsu Siemens Computers Storage Competence Center.

“CentricStor not only supports the broadest array of operating platforms in the industry, with this latest addition it is the only virtual tape platform to directly support VM and VSE,” said Mike Holland, Vice President and General Manager, CentricStor Business Unit, PeakData, Inc. “There are still hundreds of VM and VSE sites worldwide. We offer multiple benefits to these installations. Many are operating with older tape technologies and no automation. Using the CentricStor virtual solution, these sites are now able to automate with a modern, high-performance, enterprise-wide tape consolidation solution to their tape storage problems that is both effective and easy to cost-justify,” said Holland.

CentricStor - Backgrounder
CentricStor is the name given to Fujitsu Siemens Computers’ “Virtual Tape Appliance”, which is used to consolidate the magnetic tape processing. The open storage solution is employed for mainframes and for open system environments running UNIX and Windows. CentricStor employs virtual tape drives to provide all linked systems with a multitude of high-performance and permanently available backup and archiving resources over the storage area network. This universal connectivity enables different servers and applications to access the virtual archive simultaneously, without the need for a real tape drive for each individual system. CentricStor integrates transparently into existing IT environments, making it unnecessary to modify existing application and backup scenarios.
