Fujitsu Siemens Computers Automates Quality of Service
Management with
Adaptive Services Control Center
New solution reduces administrative efforts and adapts system
utilization to workload automatically
Munich/Germany, October 06, 2004 —Today at its international trade fair, VISIT 2004, Fujitsu
Siemens Computers announces its Adaptive Services Control Center
(ASCC™), which is designed to help customers to build
service-centric IT management solutions that automate the
fulfilment of Service Level Agreements (SLA). As a key element of
Fujitsu Siemens Computers’ TRIOLE™ strategy for an
optimized IT, this product is designed to minimize the need for
manual administration of diverse IT systems to maintain the highest
quality of service (QoS).
Ease of management and QoS
ASCC-based solutions function as virtualized IT resource
systems and operate autonomously, with little manual intervention
needed. They simultaneously support multiple business application
processes and servers, offering scalable capacity and
self-management capabilities to assist in administration of large
IT environments. Administrators can pre-define IT policies and
set-up their computing systems to permanently monitor the
availability and/or workload of (real or virtualized) resources,
which ensures a reaction within seconds to potential QoS
deviations. For example, typical autonomic reactions would be the
start/stop/restart of a service/server to replace a failed service
or server, and (re)provisioning of a server to meet the changing
priorities for IT capacity. This dynamic load-based provisioning
means computing systems can automatically allocate and adjust
infrastructure capacity in real-time to meet service level
requirements, as well maintaining service continuity in case of
failures.
“Many vendors have been talking about autonomics and
automating IT systems. ASCC enables one of the first tangible
solutions,” said Dieter Herzog, Executive Vice President
Enterprise Products, Fujitsu Siemens Computers. “For several
years the management of IT systems has become ever more complex and
administrators have required tools to reduce the need for
‘hands-on’ management. ASCC is designed to meet that
challenge by dynamic, priority and workload-based autonomous
provisioning of both business applications and servers. This ensure
QoS is not affected by increased fluctuation in demands for
processing power by today’s IT infrastructures.”
Operating System Agnostic
The ASCC environment supports any kind of application running
under Linux, Windows, or Solaris. Services can be easily allocated
to servers by deploying images to servers. An image contains master
copies of an operating system, a business application (or a link to
it) and configuration data (especially for storage and user network
access). Deployment services used are Netboot and Fujitsu Siemens
Computers’ RemoteDeploy.
Key Product Features
With the ASCC environment Fujitsu Siemens Computers provides
a generic framework to build self-managing automation solutions:
· ASCC-based solutions can automatically manage mass
installation, software deployment and software updates, and provide
low-cost high availability for Intel-based blade server farms
running Linux or Windows-based web, terminal, or infrastructure
services and business applications. Those environments reduce
administrative efforts with respect to costs, time and staff, and
improve service continuity.
· ASCC-based solutions automatically adapt system
utilization to cope with increasing and decreasing web loads, order
processing peaks, alignment of database resources, as well as
immediate disinfection of virus-attacked systems. Supporting
priority and workload-based re-usage of resources improves business
agility and efficiency.
· To increase availability of services assigned to
VMware™ virtual machines (VM), ASCC permanently monitors
availability of VM’s; in case of a failure ASCC automatically
re-installs the VM to the same or another VMware server.
· For services controlled by ASCC error reaction time
decreases to seconds instead of hours or days and error correction
starts immediately - enabling unattended operation of
business-critical services. Utilizing pre-tested and replicable
error correction procedures speeds-up error correction and
minimizes human errors – thus increasing overall service
availability and improving business continuity.
· By reducing downtimes of services ASCC-based solutions
enable provisioning of higher-level service levels increasing
overall quality of service and revenue of IT service providers.
· Last but not least ASCC is designed to complement
third party application management with automated ASCC-based
system/server management thus completing an application management
environment.
ASCC version currently in pilot phase will be released for
general availability in December 2004. ASCC 1.1 supports Fujitsu
Siemens Computers’ Intel-based PRIMERGY server systems (BX,
TX and RX series) and SPARC-based PRIMEPOWER server systems (up to
model 850) with corresponding non-Fujitsu Siemens Computers
platforms supported on request. In 1st Half 2005 ASCC will be
extended to support further PRIMERGY and high-end PRIMEPOWER server
systems (to automate dynamic reconfiguration of partitions).
To assist in design, configuration, setup, operating and
maintenance Fujitsu Siemens Computers provides consulting und
implementation services based on project-related agreements to
build customer-specific ASCC-based automation solutions.
