New FibreCAT N20i Storage System with iSCSI from Fujitsu Siemens Computers

Versatile Network Storage for SME loaded with features

Munich/Germany, October 06, 2004 —Today, Fujitsu Siemens Computers announced the new FibreCAT N20i entry-level NAS (Network Attached Storage) system with iSCSI (Internet Small Computer System Interface) support. The new system addresses the growing storage needs of small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) by providing 1 Terabyte of easy-to-install storage capacity using hot-swap SATA disks. The FibreCAT N20i is loaded with features for high reliability, low operating costs and easy integration. The new system now offers NAS and iSCSI in one box, without extra costs. The FibreCAT N20i will be available in quantity beginning November 2004 at an entry price in Germany from less than 4,500.- Euros (excl. VAT).

The new storage system integrates into virtually every existing IT environment: Based on Windows Storage Server 2003, the FibreCAT N20i fits seamlessly into active directory and Distributed File System (DFS) environments and is fully compatible with anti-virus software. In combination with the Windows Storage Server Feature Pack, the new system is also the ideal network storage device for Microsoft’s Exchange messaging solution. Even its physical appearance is versatile: the smart case design gives users the freedom to use it as a floor stand unit or convert it into a 5U rack-mounted device.

With its included iSCSI support the FibreCAT N20i brings the Storage Area Network (SAN) concept to the Ethernet world. iSCSI is used to facilitate storage data transfers over existing IP Networks, combining the advantages of a SAN without the complexity of FibreChannel (FC) technology. This results in consolidation, scalability and management advantages at a lower price compared to FC SANs. In addition, distance limitations in storage environments and system downtime when adding capacity are eliminated. The simpler storage administration and management help to reduce the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) even further by saving training and operation expenses.

Dr. Helmut Beck, Vice President Storage at Fujitsu Siemens Computers, points out, "With the FibreCAT N20i we have combined the latest highly reliable yet very cost-effective ingredients with our long experience in building rock-solid storage systems. The result is a very attractive and complete storage solution that doesn’t skimp on versatility. This boosts our entry-level storage offerings and represents an outstanding value for the SME market."

In developing the iSCSI features of the FibreCAT N20i Fujitsu Siemens Computers chose to partner with String Bean Software, a company focused on iSCSI storage consolidation software for the Windows platform. Dr. Dave Barnes, Vice President Marketing at String Bean Software, commented, “ We are delighted that our WinTarget technology was selected to seamlessly integrate NAS and iSCSI SAN as a standard feature of the N20i system.”

Complete storage solution - The high reliability and availability of the new FibreCAT N20i saves time and money for operators and users. Management is easy via an integrated Web user interface and the standards-based ServerView management suite by Fujitsu Siemens Computers. The solution minimizes integration costs as it comes fully tested and ready to use with no Windows Client Access Licenses (CALs) required. The included SCSI controller allows flexible integration of internal or external backup devices. For continuous operation, the FibreCAT N20i cuts backup windows to virtually zero with point-in-time copies through the Volume Shadow Copy Services (VSS).

A number of options guarantee peace of mind when running the FibreCAT N20i as highly reliable and continuous storage, for remote sites for example. RemoteView and the RemoteView Service Board mean that full-fledged remote management is available, allowing diagnosis and maintenance access to the storage unit even when the power is off. In addition, the chipDISK option can protect the NAS software in a fast and highly reliable flash memory area, while a redundant hot-plug power supply can help to maximize reliability, ensuring the lowest TCO.
