FlexFrame from Fujitsu Siemens Computers helps cut costs in the data center by up to 65 percent

BearingPoint study confirms these figures

Munich/Germany, October 06, 2004 —IT vendor Fujitsu Siemens Computers will present the results of a TCO / ROI (Total Cost of Ownership / Return on Investment) analysis for the FlexFrameTM for mySAPTM Business Suite product, which was developed in cooperation with SAP and Network Appliance, at its European IT Forum, VISIT 2004. The independent, Frankfurt-based consulting house BearingPoint was commissioned to perform the analysis in order to allow certified and consistent statements to be made about potential TCO savings. The BearingPoint study illustrates which areas of the solution have led to cost savings of up to 65 percent. For this purpose, BearingPoint not only interviewed FlexFrame customers, but also assessed customer scenarios so that these outstanding results could be placed on a solid footing.

The study comprises two parts, which together aim to produce a complete picture of the possible FlexFrame system landscapes. To this end, a number of selected, structured customer interviews were performed and experience from over 40 FlexFrame customer scenarios reflecting typical data center environments was evaluated. It was also clear from this that the special FlexFrame characteristics have a significant impact on the ROI of a SAP infrastructure.

According to the findings of this study, the use of FlexFrame in a data center can lead to process-related cost savings of up to 65 percent in the following areas of operation of SAP systems:

- SAP systems / services
- operating system
- hardware, incl. failover and high availability
- disk storage

BearingPoint based its research on a comparison between traditional SAP system landscapes with the existing FlexFrame architecture and the resulting operating cost / TCO adjustments and the reduced investment costs.

The customer interviews showed an average reduction of TCO of over 60 percent and an ROI of 168 percent within a period of three years. The breakeven point was reached by some customers after just 1.6 years. The significantly more stringent benchmarks which were used for modeling the customer scenarios still yielded cost savings of over 40 percent and an ROI of 122 percent.

Since both BearingPoint and Fujitsu Siemens Computers offer the possibility of evaluating customer SAP landscapes on the basis of an ROI analysis, these results and empirical values can now be deployed profitably for customers looking for reliable information on possible cost savings in their own SAP environments. This ensures that all customers receive their own individual ROI calculation with their own specific facts and data, which can then be presented to top management as a decision-making basis for project release.

FlexFrame is already being deployed internationally by 50 customers, including, for example, T-Systems and Hella KG; a further 120 customer projects are in the pipeline.

FlexFrame for mySAP Business Suite – Background
FlexFrame for my SAP Business Suite is the IT infrastructure implementation of the SAP Adaptive Computing functionality, as well as an initial concrete realization of a grid architecture. The solution is a joint project by technology partners Fujitsu Siemens Computers and Network Appliance. The TCO of the entire IT landscape can be considerably reduced by limiting expenditure for in-house integration. This will allow companies to follow a growth strategy and react to changes in their business environment.

The SAP NetWeaver Adaptive Computing capacities and their IT infrastructure implementation with FlexFrame for mySAP Business Suite are likewise hoping to achieve significantly greater flexibility on the IT infrastructure side in order to simplify the implementation and processing of business applications and to reduce operating costs. These improved results can be achieved through full virtualization of the SAP applications and the separation of these services from the infrastructure resources of computing, network, storage and control/system management. These infrastructure resources are provided on the basis of innovative principles of autonomous systems via features such as virtualization and automatic provisioning.

In addition, FlexFrame is a concrete virtualization example of TRIOLE™, the latest strategy announced by Fujitsu Siemens Computers for optimizing IT.
