Linux clusters significantly accelerate chip
production
Fujitsu Siemens Computers and Leica Microsystems develop
high-performance bundle
Munich, October 19, 2004 —Fujitsu Siemens Computers and Leica Microsystems, Jena, have
developed a solution which allows faster processing of chip
designs. Leica Microsystems has coupled its lithography systems
with the hpcLine Linux clusters from the leading European IT
vendor. This extremely powerful solution not only reduces
processing times but also provides better protection of investment
as Linux clusters based on the hpcLine allow considerable
flexibility with respect to extensions. Leica Microsystems exports
its e-beam lithography systems throughout the world.
All over the world, each new advance in chip development
brings with it designs of increasing complexity and a
disproportionate growth in the volume of data required to control
the lithography processes. In maskmaking, for instance, it is far
from a rare occurrence for data packages several hundred Gigabytes
in size to be passed to the e-beam exposure system. This sheer
volume means that the processing of a chip design can take a full
day or more on a traditional multi-processor system. The aim of
Leica Microsystems was to offer chip manufacturers a far quicker
alternative which also provides flexible scaling options to deal
with the demands for increased performance. Leica Microsystems is
now offering their customers a cluster made up of the hpcLine and
the open source Red Hat Linux operating system bundled with their
e-beam lithography system for mask and wafer fabrication. The
cluster considerably reduces the time required for the
compute-intensive data preparation phase prior to the lithography
process.
This is confirmed by Volker Neick, IT Manager at Leica
Microsystems: "A drastic reduction in the time required to
prepare data for lithography is a powerful argument. By creating a
bundle with the Linux cluster hpcLine we are able to offer
customers this benefit very economically."
