Fujitsu Siemens Computers forging ahead with tablet PC
innovations
New STYLISTIC ST5020 features display with extra-wide viewing
angle and the latest Intel Centrino Mobile Technology
Munich/Germany, November 16, 2004 —Fujitsu Siemens Computers has introduced its new tablet PCs,
the STYLISTIC ST502x Series. Because these portable slate computers
utilize a special pen for inputting instead of a keyboard*, they
are particularly useful for mobile professionals spending a lot of
time on their feet. The new tablet PCs weighs only 1.56 kg and come
with the latest energy efficient Ultra Low Voltage Intel®
Centrino™ Mobile Technology, as well as standard wireless LAN
and Bluetooth®. The STYLISTIC ST5020’s innovative
display, meanwhile, is legible throughout an almost 180-degree
viewing angle, enabling multiple participants, for example, to
follow presentations directly from the screen. The new models can
now be ordered for December delivery. Recommended prices in Germany
start at €2649 (incl. VAT).
STYLISTIC customers reap the benefits of the company’s
more than 12 years of experience in the development and production
of tablet PCs. The supremacy of the STYLISTIC brand, meanwhile, was
again confirmed by the latest Canalys figures for the EMEA region
slate tablet PC market (Canalys Q3 2004 estimates, 10/2004), where
Fujitsu Siemens Computers was the clear leader with 37% market
share.
With the new STYLISTIC ST502x Series and a large assortment
of accessories, Fujitsu Siemens Computers has the right system for
a variety of mobile application scenarios. While the STYLISTIC
ST5020 is equipped with an indoor display, the STYLISTIC ST5021
features a reflective outdoor display, which is easily read even in
bright sunlight. Both models are designed primarily for mobile
staff in vertical markets, such as healthcare, insurance, retail,
transportation and market research or anyone else who spends a lot
of time on their feet at work. Examples include sales personnel
requiring direct access to corporate applications when dealing with
customers, nurses collecting patient information while bedside, or
insurance adjusters filling out damage assessment forms on site.
Fujitsu Siemens Computers expects a rising demand for these
devices, also among users in more conventional horizontal markets
looking for additional versatility. The STYLISTIC ST502x Series can
also be used as PCs with keyboard, mouse and other peripherals,
such as a DVD/RW drive – simply place the tablet PC in its
docking station.
“The benefits are too obvious to ignore, and now that
the technology is mature, a breakthrough can’t be far
away;” says Peter Eßer, Executive Vice President Volume
Products and Supply Operations. “Taking handwritten notes at
meetings is simply more polite than tapping away on a keyboard that
is hidden behind a screen. And even though my handwriting is
normally quite difficult to read, Microsoft XP Tablet PC Edition
2005 recognizes the notes I make with convincing accuracy.”
Security
Tablet PCs from Fujitsu Siemens Computers fulfill the highest
security standards. The robust magnesium housing protects the
system and data from damage during day-to-day use, while the five
hardware buttons can be programmed with an access code that is
required when booting up the system. These buttons also double as
shortcuts for preferred applications and important tablet PC
features. An extra slot is designated for a SmartCard reader,
leaving the PC card slot free for other uses. The standard TPM
(trusted platform module), meanwhile, protects data on the tablet
from unauthorized access and ensures secure transactions.
