Fujitsu Siemens Computers PRIMERGY Blade Server for the Dynamic Data Center

The PRIMERGY BX620 S2 32- and 64-bit capabilities serve the performance needs of IT managers

Munich/Germany, December 15, 2004 —As part of its efforts to provide infrastructures which fulfill the demanding needs of the dynamic Data Center, Fujitsu Siemens Computers today announced the next generation of the Xeon® dual blade servers, the PRIMERGY BX620 S2 with Extended Memory 64 Technology™ (EM64T). This announcement by the leading European IT provider further enhances the PRIMERGY Blade Server ecosystem, which consists of appropriate deployment and automation tools, a successful blade server family and the skills necessary to serve the needs of the dynamic datacenter. For Data Center applications, IT managers require a server that provides excellent performance with a small footprint and low power consumption. In addition, IT managers say that it is increasingly important to have user-friendly system management as well as high scalability and increased flexibility from their servers. The new blade server PRIMERGY BX620 S2 – designed for the PRIMERGY BX600 blade server – is now available to meet these requirements at a starting price of 2.500 Euro (excl. VAT).

Thanks to the new chipset and processor, the new BX620 S2 blade server delivers additional performance. It offers ease of use and management for both 32-bit and 64-bit applications. The new architecture of the dual blade server with DDR2-400 main memory modules and 800 MHz front-side-bus offers higher bandwidth and greater throughput than its predecessors. The PRIMERGY BX600 blade server chassis offers space for up to 10 of the new dual S2 server blades.

Benefits at a glance
• Data Center flexibility due to mix configuration capability of BX620 S2 and BX660 Quad blades in one BX600 chassis
• Reduced costs for external equipment owing to the integrated KVM switch implements a single point of control for all blades.
• Reduced administration and maintenance effort thanks to a set of powerful server management tools
• Optimized response times attributable to solutions for automated operating system deployment and load balancing which adapt the server configurations to the current load profile
• Reduced operating costs thanks to the smaller footprint and reduced power consumption compared to conventional rack server farms (up to 10 hot-plug dual server blades per chassis)
• Trouble-free operation and minimum server downtimes enabled by redundant and hot-plug blades (e.g. switch blades, management blades)

Blade Servers are the future
Blade servers represent the latest evolutionary step in industry standard, Intel-based servers. Superior savings make blade servers the ideal platform for consolidating applications and Data Centers. Blade servers are one of the key elements in Fujitsu Siemens Computers’ TRIOLE strategy and have already yielded greater savings for users. For example, the high degree of automation ensures that costly downtime is kept to a minimum while personnel are freed from routine tasks.

Market researchers predict a surge in blade server growth. According to recently released IDC forecast data (IDC, Server Tracker Forecast, Sep 2004), unit shipments in the EMEA 2-way IA-server blade market are expected to grow by 80,1 % from 2004 to 2005. Additionally, they predict that the yearly growth of the dual blade servers until 2008 will be above 50 %. Blades will provide the new cornerstone of business IT for more and more companies.

What IT managers want
Better performance with a smaller footprint, high scalability, user-friendly system management, low energy consumption, flexibility – these are the special requirements which IT managers are looking for in the servers used in their data centers. Blade servers combine all server, network and storage resources in a blade chassis, meeting these demands.

PRIMERGY rack-based BX blade servers stand for flexibility, allowing dynamic software reconfiguration and full control with a redundant single point of administration. The extensive software support for control, management and deployment minimizes administrative costs and frees users from time-consuming tasks to focus on their business. The Fujitsu Siemens Computers customer supply model and built-to-order process ship ready-built and fully pre-tested solutions to customers, ready-made for their requirements and growing business needs.

Customers
The Nassauische Sparkasse (NASPA) savings bank in Wiesbaden has implemented Fujitsu Siemens Computers blade servers since mid-2004. At present, the bank uses 25 PRIMERGY BX600 servers with a total of 250 blades, and occupies only a fraction of the floor space required in the past. According to Michael Baumann, head of IT at NASPA, these blades have the special advantage that if one blade happens to fail, it is automatically replaced by another, ensuring uninterrupted operation in the various branch offices.

PRIMERGY BX600 blade server application areas
The PRIMERGY BX600 blade server is a highly scalable 19-inch, modular rack server designed to accommodate highly compact server blades up to 7 height units. Thanks to their high performance, PRIMERGY BX600 blade servers are suitable for sophisticated tasks in Data Center environments, such as database or application servers, communication servers with heavy load profiles and even terminal serves. The broad range of processor configurations enables the PRIMERGY BX600 to meet many requirements in typical Data Center applications.
