Fujitsu Siemens Computers awarded contract to upgrade norisbank’s banking system

Disaster-proof storage solution enhances data availability as well as cost-effectiveness

Munich/Germany, January 11, 2005 —The Nuremberg, Germany-based norisbank AG has commissioned Fujitsu Siemens Computers to optimize the crucial online storage network of its KORDOBA banking system. In doing so, norisbank wants to improve performance and 24x7 data availability as well as to improve the cost-effectiveness of its storage systems.

Fujitsu Siemens Computers won the contract by providing norisbank with a comprehensive concept which covered both the technical and financial aspects of the project. The solution is designed to provide more performance with no extra cost. To manage this, Fujitsu Siemens Computers, the leading European IT manufacturer, will deploy two high-end Symmetrix DMX2000 storage systems. The two systems will be installed in a disaster-proof configuration at two data centers located roughly 2km apart. The solution includes an integrated financing concept that harmonizes the operating life of all norisbank’s storage systems, enabling it to reduce its monthly storage costs.

“Fujitsu Siemens Computers has the in-house expertise to take all possible storage, BS2000 mainframe, server and network dependencies into account,” explained Dr. Willy Duester, head of IT at norisbank. “As an added bonus, the financing arrangement makes simple economic sense for us, since it also includes the IT services from two leasing companies.”

In addition to ensuring maximum availability of business critical data, norisbank’s new storage solution delivers a significant improvement to disk access time. This means shorter processing times, which should pay dividends in the form of greatly enhanced online availability – particularly at frantic month-end deadlines. Each of the two highly scalable Symmetrix systems from partner EMC has a raw capacity of 24 TB, and with their innovative storage architecture, high performance and maximum operational readiness is greatly enhanced.

To significantly increase response time to norisbank’s existing storage situation, the two systems will be linked to each other via Fibre Channel interfaces. The integrated Symmetrix Remote Data Facility software will enable data replication between the two data centers to take place in real time. In addition, the TimeFinder software running on each of the storage systems will generate synchronous data records to ensure that ongoing online operation is not disrupted during backups.
