Fujitsu Siemens Computers unveils SAForum compliant Modular Communications Platform for Telecommunications infrastructure

- Innovation highlights the company’s position as a leading supplier to carriers and telecom equipment manufacturers
- Solution will be shown at 3GSM in Cannes

Munich/Germany, February 09, 2005 —Fujitsu Siemens Computers, the leading European IT company, today revealed a comprehensive new architecture for next-generation telecommunications infrastructure. ART4CS™ (application-ready telecommunications platform for continuous services) is the first industry-standard architecture to deliver SAForum* compliant functionality and services for the telecommunications equipment of today and tomorrow.

The new platform enables carriers and telecom equipment manufacturers to develop next-generation applications with a common API (application program interface) and middleware layer that is independent of the underlying hardware. With ART4CS, Fujitsu Siemens Computers is again underlining its position as the leading supplier of innovative and practical solutions to the telecom sector. ART4CS will become available in the second half of 2005, and will be presented for the first time, with ARTCENTER, an Intel® processor based platform at 3GSM World Congress in Cannes on February 14-17 (Intel booth: Hall 4; Booth L18).

In a competitive market carriers and telecom equipment manufacturers (TEMs) are striving to differentiate themselves by developing services, such as video messaging, unified communications and e-mail push, that will increase ARPU (average revenue per user) and attract new subscribers. In this volatile environment, quick market deployment is crucial to gaining a step-up on competitors, as are economical and flexible solutions that can be scaled and adapted as subscriber expectations levels evolve. ART4CS fully supports all this and more, allowing the seamless integration of new processor and switching technologies into existing telecommunications landscapes. As a result, manufacturers and carriers can focus their investments where they get the best return.

The perfect combination of hardware and middleware layers
ART4CS offers a unique selection of seamlessly integrated standard and blade servers from the Fujitsu Siemens Computers PRIMERGY and PRIMEPOWER families, running operating systems ranging from Solaris to carrier-grade Linux. Fujitsu Siemens Computers will complete its portfolio later this year with the release of ARTCENTER, a telecom-specific carrier-grade blade server family. ARTCENTER is based on the emerging industry standard AdvancedTCA® (Advanced Telecom Computing Architecture), as stipulated by IT manufacturer group PICMG®, and will feature Intel architecture technologies and run under carrier-grade Linux.

As for the middleware layer, Fujitsu Siemens Computers completes its offering with SAFE4CS™ (SAForum Environment for Continuous Services), an SAForum-compliant carrier-grade middleware suite. Carrier-grade environments require extremely high availability (99.999%+) and manageability. To achieve this, Fujitsu Siemens Computers developed SAFE4CS consisting of PRIMECLUSTER, a standard clustering solution, RTP4CS carrier-grade middleware, and ServerView, the company’s systems management tool.

SAFE4CS has been deployed globally several thousand times over. It addresses scalable application availability up to carrier-grade needs. Standardized application interfaces, a self explaining GUI (graphical user interface) and advanced Wizard technology ensure easy operation and enable service providers to manage their network elements in a most efficient and cost-effectively way.

The next ingredient of TRIOLE
This latest innovation from Fujitsu Siemens Computers is a good match for the company’s TRIOLE strategy for optimized IT. “ART4CS is the next building block of this strategy, and is tailored to the extremely demanding requirements of the telecommunications sector,” said Dieter Herzog, Executive Vice President, Enterprise Products at Fujitsu Siemens Computers. “ART4CS highlights our commitment of becoming the partner of choice for telecom equipment manufacturers, carriers and service operators. Infrastructure solutions based on our ART4CS architecture will generate tremendous business value for them.”

As one of the leading suppliers of integrated platform solutions Fujitsu Siemens Computers is an associate member of the Intel Communications Alliance, a community of communications and embedded developers and solutions providers committed to the development of modular, standards based building blocks, platforms, and solutions based on Intel technologies, processors, products, and services ( http://www.intel.com/go/ica).

"Service providers look for ways to rapidly respond to end user demands for new and innovative services. Fujitsu Siemens Computers addresses these demands with the ART4CS platform that includes standards-based AdvancedTCA system built on Intel processors," said Anthony Ambrose, general manager of Modular Platform Programs at Intel Corporation. "Increasingly, equipment manufacturers and service providers are specifying industry standard, modular communications platforms to rapidly deliver the solutions their customers require.”
