Liquid-cooled: Introducing PRIMECENTER LC racks -
Cool-safe™ for Servers
Future proof, more reliable and quieter with Fujitsu Siemens
Computers new rack technology
Hanover/Germany, March 10, 2005 —2005 – Fujitsu Siemens Computers has taken the power of
water to the data center with its new liquid cooled PRIMECENTER LC
racks being introduced at CeBIT. LC stands for liquid cooled, and
two versions of the 19-inch server racks (38 U and 46 U models)
will feature the company’s innovative Cool-safe™ for
server technology. The new PRIMECENTER LC racks will be available
in the second quarter of 2005.
This solution handles the increasing amounts of heat produced
by servers and their subsystems and components (like CPUs and
memory) much more efficiently than the traditional fan and air
conditioning setup. Instead of cooling a constantly warming room,
Cool-safe absorbs the heat within the system using special
water-cooled heat exchangers.
The advantages to this method are numerous. Apart from the
vastly superior cooling properties of water in relation to air, a
much less complex infrastructure is needed, since PRIMECENTER LC
racks put no additional burden on the data center’s air
conditioning system. This significantly alleviates structural and
spatial requirements as well as power consumption, thus decreasing
overall operating expenses.
The “cool” PRIMECENTER LC racks can be safely
stacked much closer together than their conventional air cooled
racks, providing up to three times the server capacity in the same
room. And with their IP52* rating, which quantifies the degree of
resistance to dust and water, they can even be deployed in an
assembly hall or other previously unthinkable places outside the
data center. Additional advantages: Because the system is fully
closed, PRIMECENTER LC only needs to be filled once with water
under normal conditions and ambient noise levels are reduced by
half, or around 10 dBA.
Building upon advancement
The new PRIMECENTER LC racks deliver all the benefits of
Fujitsu Siemens Computers’ acknowledged experience in the
data center. The PRIMECENTER’s modular design allows the
seamless integration of heterogeneous data center assets, including
PRIMERGY and PRIMEPOWER compute nodes, SAN and NAS storage
subsystems, hubs, KVM switches and more, using an universal power
circuit structure.
The new server technology is more reliable and lasts longer,
while the greater availability gained further reduces the need for
administration and servicing, lowering the total cost of ownership
even more. The leading European IT provider has thus managed to
again deliver innovation that drives data center efficiency while
still protecting investments.
*) The Ingress Protection rating, a classification system for
the effectiveness of enclosures in preventing the ingress of solids
and liquids, refers to the widely accepted IEC 60529 standard
published by the International Electrotechnical Commission
