Fujitsu Siemens Computers ACTIVY Media Center technology integrated within Windows XP Media Center Edition

Berlin/Germany, September 02, 2005 —Fujitsu Siemens Computers will today announce at IFA 2005 that Microsoft is integrating elements of Fujitsu Siemens Computers’ ACTIVY Media Center technology into the Windows XP Media Center Edition. In the future, the software provider will offer the Fujitsu Siemens Computers ACTIVY technology for DVB* reception of digital TV in its Windows XP Media Center products. Fujitsu Siemens Computers originally developed this technology for its ACTIVY Media Center, setting new standards in the field of flexible digital TV. The two companies have agreed to a technology partnership for the further development of advanced TV solutions.

“The technological collaboration with Microsoft underscores our technological leadership in the field of digital TV,” comments Peter Esser, Executive Vice President Volume Products at Fujitsu Siemens Computers. “In recent years we have developed pioneering user friendly solutions for the digital home which have clearly set us apart from the competition. And we are continuing on this path with our new Digital Home portfolio, which is based above all on high functionality, ease-of-use and networkability.”

“The expansion of our strategic relationship with Fujitsu Siemens Computers to include the development of Digital Television Technologies specific to the European market will enable the Windows Media Center Operating System to support the rapid Analog to Digital conversion in the European Television market,” said Rick Thompson, corporate vice president, Windows Client Extended Platforms Division at Microsoft Corp. “Fujitsu Siemens Computers’ wealth of technical expertise and DVB technologies will help Microsoft deliver richer, best-in-class television experiences to our European customers.”

Long-standing technological leadership
In the field of reception, recording and editing of digital TV in line with the DVB standard, Fujitsu Siemens Computers has the technological lead. The company started in 1998, when it became one of the first manufacturers to develop equipment for digital TV. Since then, a multi-member team of developers has been working without interruption on enhancing the company’s ACTIVY Media Center solution. Its latest release also comes with integrated pay-TV reception.

ACTIVY Media Center
The ACTIVY Media Center’s flexible hard-disk recorder allows high-definition DVB-S, DVB-T or analog TV programs to be recorded and then easily edited with menu guidance. The integrated ±R/RW DVD burner supports the new double-layer format, which enables high-definition recordings on a permanent medium. The viewing of live broadcasts can be suspended with the time-shift function and later resumed with a time delay. The ACTIVY Media Center shows its special talent in the home network, where data can be exchanged from PCs or notebooks either with cable or using wireless LAN.
