On-demand licensing flexibly covers peak loads in the Dynamic Data Center

Host applications now available as web services and .NET objects – thanks to WebTransactions

Munich/Germany, September 06, 2005 —Fujitsu Siemens Computers, the leading European IT manufacturer, recently launched a new version of its WebTrans¬actions integration software. Now, on-demand licenses provide an easy way to cover temporary peak loads. The new version, called WebTransactions V7.0, also opens up additional possibilities to integrate host applications in advanced web-based IT infrastructures. The new software delivers several key benefits: Companies can now run legacy applications not just in the form of Enterprise JavaBeans but also as web services or .NET objects, using the new application components to integrate them in business processes. Additionally, WebTransactions V7.0 supports the standard interface JSR 168 allowing host systems to be smoothly integrated into compatible portals. None of these features require any modifications to existing applications. As an added bonus, central cluster management enhances failsafe performance while keeping all licenses permanently available.

“The openSEAS middleware suite is a core component in TRIOLE, our strategy for flexible and cost-effective IT,” says Dieter Herzog, Executive Vice President Enterprise Products at Fujitsu Siemens Computers. “Introducing dynamic IT infrastructures calls for a solution that guarantees reliable data interchange between new and existing applications. To this end, WebTransactions provides a whole raft of integration features. Reliability has never been greater, and routine administration could not be simpler. At the same time, flexible licensing arrangements give companies low-cost solutions tailored to their specific requirements.”

On-demand licensing – a new dimension in flexibility
Companies don't always need the same number of licenses. On some days – during end-of-month closing, for example – they require more than during other times. In the past, they had to keep a sufficient number of concurrent user licenses available all the time just to cover these occasional peaks. In the new version of WebTransactions, Fujitsu Siemens Computers has therefore introduced on-demand licenses for the Dynamic Data Center. As a result, Integration software can now be used far more flexibly.

A broad range of integration options
The new WebTransactions Business Object Builder now lets companies integrate proven mainframe applications in .NET applications or make them available as web services. The functionality of the openUTM, BS2000/OSD or MVS dialog applications has been encapsulated in Business Objects. In the form of .NET components, web services or traditional Java classes, they can therefore be mixed and matched with new application components and, with the aid of graphical tools, transformed into new business processes. The middleware thus permits unrestricted access to host applications, both from Windows and UNIX platforms and over the web. Corporate users reap the reward of a consistent application system that effortlessly accommodates new components and can be adapted flexibly to new requirements.

Simple integration in portals
WebTransactions provides out-of-the-box integration for BS2000/OSD, z/OS, AS400, and UNIX applications for the mySAP Enterprise portal, the Oracle portal, and all other portals that support JSR168 and WSRP. The integration software even allows users to configure small portals of their own. An interface module is included in the package to provide role-specific portal interfaces. The fully functional sample installation also supplied with the product provides users fast, easy and personalized access to their applications. No previous knowledge is required. In addition, the WebTransactions portal has been optimized for use on PDAs and now supports client roaming. In other words, a client can be changed in mid-session with no loss of data. Mobile users too will value the chance to work offline when they don't have a network connection to the host application. As soon as the connection is available again, their data is synchronized automatically.

High availability
Today's data centers often have no central arrangement that manages clusters of licenses across different systems. This means that licenses have to be reshuffled among concurrent users if ever a computer goes down. To solve this problem, WebTransactions V7.0 from Fujitsu Siemens Computers now incorporates a central cluster management feature. Concurrent users who are registered on the cluster controller are automatically distributed across the computers in the cluster. The benefits are obvious: no reconfiguration – at any time; and the full complement of users is available at all times.
