Fujitsu Siemens Computers and Egenera Sign €240 Million
Exclusive OEM Strategic Alliance in Europe, Middle East and Africa
(EMEA)
PRIMERGY BladeFrame delivers the Dynamic Data Center in a
box
Munich/Germany, September 14, 2005 —Fujitsu Siemens Computers, the leading European IT provider,
today announced an exclusive OEM strategic alliance with Egenera
Inc. to bring additional levels of flexibility and economic
efficiency into the Dynamic Data Center. To enable customers to
increase the efficient operation of IT, Fujitsu Siemens Computers
will integrate the award-winning Egenera® BladeFrame®
solution in its PRIMERGY server portfolio. This exclusive strategic
alliance, worth €240 million ($300 million) over
approximately three years, is effective immediately and is valid
throughout Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA). Fujitsu
Siemens Computers will become the sole provider of PRIMERGY
BladeFrame in EMEA and will start shipping product during the
fourth calendar quarter of 2005 in Germany, Italy, Switzerland,
Belgium and the United Kingdom. The products will be available in
the first calendar quarter of 2006 in all other EMEA countries. In
addition, the agreement also serves as a framework for future joint
research and development collaboration, joint solution testing and
Fujitsu Siemens Computers will have a seat on Egenera’s
technology advisory board.
“This agreement is a natural extension of our Dynamic
Data Center and TRIOLE™ strategy. Fujitsu Siemens Computers
and Egenera have a complementary vision of the Dynamic Data Center.
With our proven IT infrastructure solutions, such as FlexFrame for
mySAP Business Suite®, we made this vision already a
reality,” said Dr. Joseph Reger, Chief Technology Officer at
Fujitsu Siemens Computers. “Our customers want solutions that
help them adapt and build their data centers to support overall
business objectives. The PRIMERGY BladeFrame system, a technology
that is already deployed in marquee data centers around the globe,
brings the DDC to the next level. We are excited to team up with
Egenera in the Dynamic Data Center, as they have one of the most
complete visions and advanced implementation in this field. We look
forward to a successful alliance that will benefit our customers
across EMEA.”
“Today’s agreement with Fujitsu Siemens Computers
is a major proof point, validating our strategy of growth through
strategic alliances and geographic diversification,” said Bob
Dutkowsky, chairman, president and CEO, Egenera. “We were
looking for a strong partner among IT market leaders that shared
our vision, appreciated our value proposition, and had the strength
and breadth to deliver our solutions across EMEA. In addition, this
agreement provides a framework for joint research and development,
benefiting both companies and our customers. We are gratified that
a company of Fujitsu Siemens Computers’ caliber has chosen
Egenera as a technology partner to help make the next generation of
data center technology a reality for its customers.”
Through adding PRIMERGY BladeFrame to its solutions offering,
Fujitsu Siemens Computers is providing customers an additional
avenue towards the Dynamic Data Center. Designed to help
enterprises to enhance their responsiveness to market
opportunities, the Dynamic Data Center offers CIOs infrastructures
to control costs and improve ROI. They are, in turn, able to
support their organizations with increased flexibility and
application performance as well as effective resource utilization.
Customers are currently in the process of evaluating and
integrating dynamic IT solutions designed to help them lower
operating costs, reduce complexity and increase flexibility in the
commercial use of their applications. Fujitsu Siemens Computers,
who has pioneered innovative dynamic IT solutions such as
FlexFrame, are now taking levels of virtualization further. The
company is providing customers two complementary paths for dynamic
IT: FlexFrame for ISV specific infrastructures like SAP and
PRIMERGY BladeFrame for application heterogeneous environments.
PRIMERGY BladeFrame, based on Intel XEON™ and AMD
Opteron™ processors, is a new type of dynamic enterprise
server solution that creates a pool of anonymous, interchangeable
server nodes. It disassociates the components that make up this
pool – processors, networks and storage – and operates
with virtual servers. The effect is to make the server hardware
fundamentally independent from the operating system (Linux or
Windows) or application software. PRIMERGY BladeFrame is a
dynamically usable server pool in which the individual computer
nodes are reduced to CPU and memory resources (known as
‘stateless servers’) using shared, virtual I/O
interfaces for LAN/SAN/switches mapped by the integrated PAN
(Processing Area Network) Manager™ software.
Fujitsu Siemens Computers will become the sole provider of
PRIMERGY BladeFrame in EMEA. As of the fourth quarter 2005, Fujitsu
Siemens Computers will offer two different models. The PRIMERGY
BladeFrame BF 400 consolidates up to 96 server-class x86 processors
running Linux® or Microsoft® Windows. The system consists
of a chassis containing up to 24 processing blades, redundant
central controllers, redundant integrated switches, redundant
high-speed interconnects and PAN Manager software. The entry-level
model PRIMERGY BladeFrame BF 200 contains up to six processing
blades.
