BladeFrame: Virtual Server Pool Solution in Productive Use at T-Systems

Similar installations at the Frankfurt and Prague locations in the e-service area

Munich, July 10, 2006 —Today, Fujitsu Siemens Computers announced that T-Systems is now operating its e-service area platform on a PRIMERGY BladeFrame powered by Egenera system. T-Systems customers utilize this platform for their e-mail systems, e-shops, Internet portals and data warehouse applications. PRIMERGY BladeFrame supports the B2B services platform with flexible IT resources which adapt themselves dynamically to changing requirements. T-Systems customers profit from the installation in the T-Systems data centers, which are linked via fast, flexible networks. As a result, T-Systems can provide its customers with the fast, flexible, reliable and affordable services operated on Internet and intranet servers as well as corresponding server-based applications. In addition, T-Systems customers can now take advantage of on-demand services in their intranets.

E-service area based on PRIMERGY BladeFrame
T-Systems decided to use the enterprise server solution from Fujitsu Siemens Computers, since the system fulfills the requirements for short-term cost reduction and at the same time represents a step towards the realization of the company’s long-term strategic vision of a flexible and responsive data center infrastructure. The flexible T-Systems IP transport platform is combined with cost-effective infrastructure, hosting and application solutions from individual data centers in the e-service area. The BladeFrame technology and the MPLS (multi-protocol label switching) network connection also help to reduce costs.

“PRIMERGY BladeFrame helps us to provide our customers with e-service area services in a quick, reliable and fail-safe fashion. For many of the enterprises we serve, the improved service quality and more efficient IT are decisive criteria in selecting e-service area services. Of course, cost savings also play an important role. So far, customers have been able to save up to 30% of costs over their own operations. At the same time, they benefit from a high-availability solution instead of a single server and can also, within a matter of minutes, utilize an additional server for business intelligence applications or for intranet or Internet services,” explains Ulrich Kemp, responsible for handling business with major and medium-sized enterprises at T-Systems.

Cross-application server virtualization
As part of an exclusive, strategic OEM arrangement with Egenera, Inc., Fujitsu Siemens Computers integrated the Egenera BladeFrame solution into the PRIMERGY server product line. As a result, the company enables its customers to increase not only the productivity of their IT infrastructures, but also the flexibility and economic efficiency of the dynamic data center.

PRIMERGY BladeFrame is an Enterprise class system. Equipped with x86 processors, the system can support three operating systems. The special feature of this solution is its sophisticated virtualization technology, which allows for virtual server resources across several applications. A BladeFrame system implements a pool of anonymous servers which can be defined virtually and separates the processor, network and storage components from each other. As a result, the server hardware, operating systems (Linux/Windows/Solaris) and application software are fundamentally independent of each other, thus creating a dynamic pool of computing resources. Operating systems and applications can be flexibly allocated or removed as required.

In addition, RedHat Linux, SUSE Linux, Microsoft Windows and Sun Solaris can run on a single PRIMERGY BladeFrame –on both AMD and Intel-based blades.

This solution provides special advantages in heterogeneous application environments. It maximizes IT system flexibility and improves the responsiveness of the IT infrastructure in line with changing business requirements. Since the servers can be reassigned without any effort, this increases your capacity – which in turn reduces costs. Thanks to the virtual architecture, blade servers used for batch processing overnight can be used for transactions during the day.

PRIMERGY BladeFrame also enables you to configure applications with little extra effort while maintaining high availability. The virtualization of hard drives and networks combined with the option to freely allocate and replace CPU resources makes the backup servers, redundant network and memory connections and complex clustering software required by traditional HA deployments unnecessary. The N+1 failover implemented to ensure high availability in hardware can also be used at the system level to enable disaster recovery. The mirroring function makes it possible to back up several BladeFrames in different locations on a single BladeFrame.
