Strong partnership for the environment
Fujitsu Siemens Computers takes part in EPA program
researching alternative flame retardants for Printed Circuit
Boards
Munich, December 19, 2006 —Fujitsu Siemens Computers is supporting the U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in the search for
alternative, environmentally conscious substitutes for brominated
flame retardants. The leading European IT provider has committed to
the EPA program "Design for the Environment Program
(DfE)", which seeks to reduce the individual health risks and
environmental damage that can be caused by IT production.
Fujitsu Siemens Computers is committed to eliminating the use
of harmful and potentially harmful substances in its products and
production processes, to minimize any risk to end users and to the
environment. It has therefore joined the EPA partnership project,
set up to investigate the use of alternative flame retardants and
their impact on the environment. One of the project’s aims is
to establish a database containing data on the suitability of
alternative materials for printed circuit boards (PCBs). As a
member of the project team, representatives from Fujitsu Siemens
Computers take part in regular meetings and contribute experience
in the development of lead-free and halogen-free PCBs.
Already a leading developer and manufacturer of
environmentally conscious IT products, Fujitsu Siemens Computers
has been working for decades to eliminate hazardous substances from
its products, and, where technologically and economically feasible,
the company voluntarily exceeds legal minimum requirements. This
engagement for the environment has been recognized by environmental
protection organizations like the WWF, with which Fujitsu Siemens
Computers has a cooperation in Germany, or like Greenpeace who rank
the company as one of the top 3 companies worldwide in their
“Guide to Greener Electronics”.
Avoiding the use of halogenic substances, including
brominated flame retardants (BRFs), has been part of the Fujitsu
Siemens Computers Green Standard since 2002. Today, BFRs are used
neither in housings nor in formed plastic parts weighing more than
25 grams. In addition, Fujitsu Siemens Computers has cut the
proportion of chlorine and bromine in PCBs from 12 to less than
0.15 percent in its Green products. For all other products, Fujitsu
Siemens Computers is working with its suppliers to reduce the
amount of halogens, and find acceptable alternatives.
