Fujitsu Siemens Computers asks: "What does Germany think about Green IT?"

A representative survey by the FORSA Institute carried out on behalf of the leading European IT manufacturer revealed: German citizens want to see a "Green" approach by local authorities

Munich/Hannover, March 03, 2008 —

A study commissioned by Fujitsu Siemens Computers shows that the German population has a clear opinion and high expectations from the government in regards to the environment and climate protection. The representative sample showed that all the measures in respect to these topics received substantial support.

The study showed that Germans- 94% of women and 86% men questioned- believe that a "green commitment" in IT procurement is still not weighted highly enough in requests for tenders issued by public authorities.

The majority of people asked (90%) believe that the federal government and local authorities should attach more significance to Green IT. There are some regional differences: the demand that more money should be invested on climate and environmentally friendly IT equipment was stronger in the West of Germany (79%) than in the East (67%). However, both were united when it comes to investing for Green IT. The public regarded extra spending of up to approximately 20% for "green" IT products by public authorities as suitable.

"The results of this study show us that we, as a company, are on the right track with our Green IT approach", said Hans-Dieter Wysuwa, Senior Vice President Sales Germany and Managing Director Germany. "The first EU guidelines regarding public authority tenders have been established. We at Fujitsu Siemens Computers are pace-setters in Green IT and are already able to provide authorities with our green solutions and services.“

While the study mainly shows the trend towards environmentally friendly IT equipment in Germany, these expectations are not just directed towards government. Industry should also take this responsibility more seriously. For example, almost everyone asked demanded the following: environmentally friendly disposal of old devices (97%), reduction of hazardous substances to be used in production (95%) and the lowest possible power consumption for PCs and IT devices (95%).

These results confirm the long tradition practised by the environmentally conscious Fujitsu Siemens Computers. As early as 1988- almost 20 years ago- the company started a recycling service for IT devices returned to their Paderborn location. The first internal guideline from Fujitsu Siemens Computers for environmentally suitable product designs was issued four years later. In 1993 the company developed and launched on the market the first Green PC, the PCD-4sl. These are just a few of the many environmental protection innovations where Fujitsu Siemens Computer was first to the mark within the IT branch. Green PCs today make up about 75% of the Professional PCs sold by the company.
