New version of FlexFrame for SAP adds support for IBM’s relational database DB2

Version 4.1 of dynamic IT solution for SAP environments offers enhanced security functionality and is ready for SAP NetWeaver 7.1

Munich, June 05, 2008 —

In introducing a new version of FlexFrame for SAP, a highly efficient IT infrastructure that dynamically assigns servers to SAP applications in line with system demand, Fujitsu Siemens Computers expands its base of target customers by adding full support for IBM’s relational database DB2.

Supporting IBM’s DB2, one of the most-popular relational databases used with SAP, means that a wider base of SAP customers can now benefit from FlexFrame for SAP’s ability to deliver maximized use of server resources, while maintaining the highest levels of application availability. Certification of DB2 databases on Version 4.1 of FlexFrame for SAP was completed by Fujitsu Siemens Computers in close collaboration with IBM’s Software Group.

Fujitsu Siemens Computers developed FlexFrame for SAP to meet customers’ changing IT needs by providing system consolidation, virtualization and automation. Enhanced application hardening is among further improvements to Version 4.1, which scales from fewer than five servers through to data center farms of 100-plus machines.

Dieter Herzog, Executive Vice President Infrastructure Products at Fujitsu Siemens Computers says: “As a key member of our family of solutions for the Dynamic Data Center, designed to add value and boost productivity for end customers, FlexFrame for SAP is a proven solution and more than 150 end customers run their SAP systems on this virtualized platform.

Herzog adds: “Now by introducing support for IBM DB2 relational databases, we are turning FlexFrame for SAP into an attractive proposition for an even broader base of SAP customers – from medium-sized businesses all the way through to large enterprises. We have worked closely with SAP and IBM Software Group to ensure that FlexFrame for SAP provides a seamless infrastructure for the optimum performance of SAP applications.”

Tony Lock, an industry analyst with Freeform Dynamics, comments: “Customers want SAP solutions that are simple to deploy and manage operationally, but they still wish to have a choice of database platform. This means that any organization that wishes to be counted amongst the front runners in providing seamless support for SAP environments must offer the most widely-used relational databases. Adding support for DB2 therefore enhances the value proposition of FlexFrame for SAP.”

"DB2 is an industry leading database and is widely used by SAP customers on many platforms (Unix, Windows, Linux, etc.). SAP running on DB2 has proven to provide 30% cost savings versus other databases. With this important joint development with Fujitsu Siemens Computers, DB2 is now supported by FlexFrame for SAP and we expect that a large number of Fujitsu Siemens Computers hardware customers will take advantage of this and use DB2 with Flexframe for SAP," says Robert D. Thomas, Vice President, Business Development, IBM Software Group, Information Management Software.

A company already benefiting from the flexibility of running FlexFrame for SAP on DB2 databases is the REHAU Group, which has standardized on SAP-based applications for its 15,000 employees in 170-plus locations in 54 countries worldwide. Germany-based REHAU completed its implementation in close collaboration with IBM’s Software Group and Fujitsu Siemens Computers’ Infrastructure Services division, which is responsible for ongoing system maintenance and support through a SolutionContract service agreement.
