“Dynamic Data Center Challenge” extended to six new countries after successful first wave

Initiative demonstrates how organizations can reduce IT Data Center costs by 40-plus percent – or 10,000 Euros will be donated to charity

Munich, July 10, 2008 —

The Dynamic Data Center (DDC) Challenge, helping customers determine data center savings of at least 40 percent, has proven to be such a success that Fujitsu Siemens Computers is now extending the campaign into six new markets. The DDC Challenge, carried out at Fujitsu Siemens Computers’ own expense, invites companies to participate in a discovery workshop that will help identify savings of at least 40 percent in data center operational costs. If Fujitsu Siemens Computers is unable to demonstrate that this level of saving can be achieved, the company promises to donate 10,000 Euros to the Forest Stewardship Council, a non-governmental organization promoting socially- and environmentally-responsible forest management worldwide.

The first round of the DDC Challenge, which ran in Northern European countries and Benelux, was so well-received by enterprises that Fujitsu Siemens Computers is now extending the program. From July, customers in Germany and Greece will be invited to participate, with Ireland, France, South Africa and Turkey to follow in September.

“So far, our promise to identify savings of at least 40 percent is unbeaten,” says Fujitsu Siemens Computers Chief Technology Officer, Dr Joseph Reger. “There has been a superb response to our initiative, which has taken the critical step of showing companies very tangible ways to realize savings in power and resources usage. Many companies are finding it difficult to measure the efficiency of their data center: the DDC Challenge provides detailed, tailored reports on an individual level that highlight exactly how companies can start realizing significant savings by implementing IT infrastructure changes.

“Although there is no payout today from Fujitsu Siemens Computers to the Forest Stewardship Council, the success of our bold promise also means that we are helping to protect the environment, since we have been able to introduce companies taking the Dynamic Data Center challenge to significant savings in resources – therefore, providing a longer-term environmental gain,” comments Reger.

On a case by case basis, each discovery workshop determines a participating company’s potential savings in energy and operating costs, as well as shrinking a datacenter’s physical footprint, through the implementation of up-to-the-minute technologies such as consolidation, virtualization and standardization. With its Dynamic Data Center (DDC) strategy, Fujitsu Siemens Computers focuses on harnessing the latest virtualization and automation technologies to deliver flexible IT infrastructures responsive to changing business needs.

Marcelle Peuckert, Development Manager at the Forest Stewardship Council says: “This initiative from Fujitsu Siemens Computers is to be applauded since it rises well above the general hubbub, offering participating companies a win-win situation. Companies taking the DDC Challenge are either able to identify big savings in resources, or we benefit from a cash donation. We would like to see other IT vendors following suit with such a positively-focused campaign.”

The DDC Challenge is open to any company that agrees to work with Fujitsu Siemens Computers to conduct a discovery workshop focused on its current data center infrastructure.

The initiative also complements Fujitsu Siemens Computers’ focus on “green IT” at a time when energy costs for powering data centers are climbing sharply. The DDC Challenge provides companies operating data centers with tangible intelligence on how they can cut power consumption and therefore reduce their carbon footprint.
