“My very first SAS” eases access to tomorrow's interface technology for SMEs

Reliable and economical tape automation using FibreCAT TX08 – plus free SAS controller

Munich, November 12, 2008 —

“My very first SAS” is a new package from Fujitsu Siemens Computers designed especially to give SMEs affordable and easy access to Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) interface technology for backing up business-critical applications. With SAS technology, customers gain from fast data transmission rates (3 Gbps per connection,) extreme reliability and flexibility. The package includes the FibreCAT TX08 tape system that can be fitted with an LTO-3 SAS or LTO-4 SAS drive and an SAS controller at no extra cost, as well as the appropriate cables. Also included free of charge are a preferred quality LTO data and cleaning cassette from Fujitsu Siemens Computers, a rack-mount kit and the backup software ARCserve and XOsoft Enterprise Rewinder from CA. In comparison with the costs for the individual components, customers can save more than 20 percent by purchasing “My very first SAS“. The bundle is available immediately from the company's sales partners with prices starting at €3,499.

“In the future, SAS technology will replace the traditional parallel SCSI interface and, in addition to Fibre Channel, it will establish itself in the next few years as a connection standard in the memory-intensive backup sector,” comments Helmut Beck, Vice President Storage Business at Fujitsu Siemens Computers. “Our ‘My very first SAS’ package helps SMEs in particular to gain easy access to future-proof technology. Combined with our tried and tested FibreCATTX system, companies will gain a reliable and easy-to-use tape automation system that at the same time provides the necessary transfer rates for the new generation of LTO drives.”

"Customers are looking to greater bandwidths as their data volumes grow and SAS has evolved as a new standard by the SCSI Trade Association,” said Program Director Claus Egge from the market intelligence firm IDC. "Customers wanting not only the obvious benefits of simplified and smaller connectors but also 3 Gb/s should explore SAS as their new interconnect. With its new package, Fujitsu Siemens Computers is aiming to help customers take advantage of these benefits.”

FibreCAT TX08 – automated backup with LTO SAS technology

FibreCAT TX08 belongs to the FibreCAT TX S2 product family. The tape system offers SMEs affordable, automated tape storage with LTO technology that ensures large capacities, high speed and low media costs. The FibreCAT TX08 has two four-slot magazines and can be fitted either with an LTO-3 or LTO-4 drive. Should customers wish to convert to another LTO standard, all they have to do is switch the tape drive. With a rack height of just 1U, the compact device has memory capacity of 12.8 TB (LTO-4 compressed.) As a result, automated data backup can be carried out for two weeks without changing tape magazines. This helps to avoid human errors in backup cycles caused by forgetting to switch backup tapes and considerably reduces the time required to consistently create data backups .

By using the standard SAS interface, companies can simply and affordably implement tape backup. At the same time, SAS overcomes the speed restrictions of traditional standard SCSI. In addition to enhanced performance, SAS also scores by providing high levels of scalability and reliability.
