Fujitsu Siemens Computers launches a mobile tablet PC specially designed for the healthcare sector
The IT infrastructure provider expands its comprehensive healthcare solution portfolio to include the new highly flexible and innovative ESPRIMO MA
Augsburg, VISIT, November 12, 2008 —
Fujitsu Siemens Computers launches ESPRIMO MA, a sophisticated mobile PC developed for the healthcare sector. The robust tablet PC is an ideal companion for visiting wards or making house calls. The ESPRIMO MA is fanless and can be completely sanitized for use in sterile environments. Functions such as integrated high-speed 3G/UMTS and WLAN enable digitally-archived patient data to be accessed anywhere, at anytime bringing a "paperless" hospital one step closer. A dual SmartCard reader ensures maximum security for sensitive patient data. The ESPRIMO MA not only integrates seamlessly into the "Dynamic Infrastructures" service offered by Fujitsu Siemens Computers, but can also be easily integrated into the existing hospital IT infrastructure, such as a systems management system. The ESPRIMO MA will be available in the second quarter of 2009.
One of the major trends in hospitals is replacing hard-copy paper documentation with online digital documentation. The reason is obvious: efficient processes are crucial to the success of clinics and hospitals as commercial constraints on healthcare increase. Legally, doctors must maintain comprehensive treatment and medication records; but fewer employees are available overall for an increasing number of patients. The flood of data can no longer be managed using normal paper procedures. About 80% of archived paper documents are already in need of revision. A sophisticated IT infrastructure is needed to ensure that doctors have time to focus on patients, rather than administrative work.
In addition to storage solutions, servers and a large number of managed services, Fujitsu Siemens Computers, the leading European IT infrastructure provider, also offers devices for clinics and healthcare facilities that tailored for the healthcare sector as part of its "Dynamic Infrastructures" service. The ESPRIMO MA is the latest addition to this offering.
This robust tablet PC, weighing only 1.3 kilos, is specially designed for the medical environment. It can be used at patients’ bedsides, in the examination room or even on the move – for example in an emergency – making an important contribution toward medical process optimization. Instead of noting patient data on paper and later transferring that data to a PC, nursing staff can archive information digitally on-site. This saves nurses time and gives doctors access to patient data immediately from wherever they are, allowing them to immediately compare the condition of the patient with earlier findings, for instance. The ESPRIMO MA follows trend toward digitalization of data, successfully integrating it into a mobile concept. The ESPRIMO MA already meets all GEMATIK requirements regarding future mobile use of the electronic healthcare card for general practitioners and emergency services.
There are three features that give the ESPRIMO MA a unique position in the market:
Sterility can be extremely important in a hospital setting. Thanks to its fanless and completely sterilizable housing, the ESPRIMO MA is the only product on the market that can also be used in sterile environments, including operating rooms.
Data protection and data security are also of great significance in the medical sector. A dual SmartCard reader turns the ESPRIMO MA into FortKnox with regard to sensitive patient data.
Integrated high-speed 3G/UMTS and WLAN allow doctors and hospital staff to connect to their system at all times and from any location. With this connection, they can call up or enter data, ensuring diagnostic reliability and optimal patient care. Furthermore, data can also be updated using a barcode and RFID reader, making sure that no additional time is needed for data and system maintenance.
To integrate the ESPRIMO MA into clinics and hospitals, Fujitsu Siemens Computers, and its partner Intel, are working closely with various manufacturers of clinic software systems to ensure full compatibility between various software programs and the Intel Mobile Clinical Assistant platform that the ESPRIMO MA is based on. The ESPRIMO MA can already be seamlessly integrated into an existing IT infrastructure, for example, a system management system. This is due to the high product flexibility of the ESPRIMO MA. It is available as a thin or fat client, depending on requirements.
"Many modern clinics have already recognized that a specialist mobility strategy is increasingly important to process efficiency and patient well-being. As a result, demand for mobile PCs in the healthcare sector is skyrocketing drastically,” said Armin Kumpf, Senior Director Business Mobile at Fujitsu Siemens Computers. “Our new ESPRIMO MA offers this important market a product that has been developed specifically for the industry’s requirements; one which more than meets the exacting and unique demands of a clinic environment and which paves the way for the effective use of mobile applications within the IT infrastructure used by hospitals and in surgeries."
The ESPRMO MA is due to be available in the second quarter 2009. Final pricing is not yet available, but should be that of a high configuration business notebook.
