Fujitsu Is First Vendor to Have Rack and Tower Servers Certified for ENERGY STAR 1.0

Energy-efficient servers help customers reduce power consumption

Munich, August 27, 2009 —

Fujitsu today announced that it is the first vendor to comply with the stringent ENERGY STAR 1.0 rating for both its rack and tower servers. In the first phase, four PRIMERGY server configurations will be ENERGY STAR 1.0-certified, underlining Fujitsu’s overall approach of innovation and efficiency to reduce carbon footprint and help customers cut power consumption and costs. Confirmation is expected shortly for systems currently undergoing ENERGY STAR certification.

ENERGY STAR is a well-known label that helps customers easily identify energy-efficient systems. In extending its program to include x86 servers, ENERGY STAR has set rigorous power management requirements.

“By deploying more energy-efficient servers, organizations can reduce total datacenter energy consumption,” says Jens-Peter Seick, Senior Vice President x86 Server Product Unit at Fujitsu Technology Solutions. “We are committed to helping our customers reduce power consumption and as a result, benefit from significant cost savings. Achieving ENERGY STAR 1.0 certification for our PRIMERGY rack and tower servers underlines that commitment. On average, servers that earn the ENERGY STAR label are 30 percent more energy-efficient than standard servers.”

The first four PRIMERGY models certified for ENERGY STAR 1.0 are configurations for the TX200 S5 and TX300 S5 towers, specifically geared at SME customers, plus the RX200 S5 and RX300 S5 racks. Qualifying PRIMERGY servers include Cool-safe™ technology for improved air intake and system cooling, energy-efficient power supply units, and intelligent power server management functions to measure, control and limit energy consumption. The current ENERGY STAR specification for servers only covers x86 servers of up to 4 sockets. The four certified configurations are available immediately.

Since 1994, Fujitsu has actively participated in the ENERGY STAR program and offers a variety of PCs, small-scale servers, notebooks, thin clients, workstations and displays that meet the applicable U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requirements for ENERGY STAR qualification. With the latest ENERGY STAR 1.0 certification, Fujitsu now extends its cooperation with ENERGY STAR to include energy-efficient x86 servers.
